Frequently Asked Questions

What if my child does not attend a magnet school?

All students from all schools are welcome in the program. No matter what district or city you are from, all students have the opportunity to participate on a first come first served basis.  We are a private and independent program which seeks to provide enrichment to all students and learners.

What to do about absences?

We take attendance in each class. Please notify the Green Leaf Academy office of any dates you know your child will be absent. If your child is ill or has a doctor’s appointment, please call the office in the morning. When a child is absent, at the request of parents, if there is class homework or other assignments missed, the Green Leaf Academy office can email assignments or parents may stop by the office in the afternoon to pick up assignments. Daily attendance is recommended for all classes. Please notify the office of any planned absences, but fees will not be pro-rated.

What to do about drop-off & pick-up?

Drop-Off & Pick-Up: You may park on the street and enter the school's front gate, then walk to the line up area along the grass. If you prefer to park on campus, please use the parking lot.

Chatsworth Hills Academy is located at 21523 Rinaldi St, Chatsworth, CA 91311.

  1. You should plan to arrive between 8:00-8:15. This is the official sign in time. Unless you have made arrangements before school, please do not drop off children unsupervised.

  2. At the close of the school day (12:45 P.M.), teacher assistants will escort children from their period 4 classrooms to the line-up area. You must initial the sign out folder when you pick up your child.

If you need to pick up your child before 12:45p.m., please come to the office and sign out your child.

It is important that children are picked up promptly when classes are over (12:45p.m.). If a child is still waiting for transportation at 1:00 p.m., the child will be taken to the Green Leaf Academy office and you will be charged a babysitting fee of $1.00 PER minute after 1:00 p.m., payable in cash to the supervising adult.

Pickup for the afternoon session is 5:15pm – 5:30pm. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate any pick-ups after 5:30pm. Green Leaf will make every attempt to contact the parent(s) or other persons authorized by the parent(s) to pick-up the child from the facility. If the parent(s) or other persons authorized cannot be located, or if satisfactory arrangements for picking up the child cannot be made, the appropriate local law enforcement and welfare authorities may be contacted.

What to do about changing classes?

We will be traveling around the school campus to a variety of classrooms and outdoor activity areas. When changing to the next class period, or moving toward the parent pick up area, students will be accompanied by a teacher or TA. Since each student wears a name badge displaying the class schedule and room number, we are assured that students arrive at the next classroom.

Full payment is due at the time of registration.

What to do about children with a disability?

If your child receives special accommodations during the regular school year, please make provisions so that your child can receive the same accommodations while receiving instruction at The Green Leaf Academy.  The Green Leaf Academy is an elective 5 week program and is unable to provide 1:1 or other specialized individual aides.

What to do about the dress code?
It will no doubt be a warm summer! Please dress your child in comfortable clothing that is suitable to the daily activities.  If enrolled in a class that may get messy, please send an old shirt as a cover-up to leave at school. You may want to send along a light jacket if your child is chilled by air-conditioning.  Because we will be on the playground and outside each day, choose tennis shoes, sandals and flip-flops are not recommended due to the terrain. Shoes with wheels are not permitted. Feel free to send water for hydration.

What to do with required forms?

In addition to registration, you will need to complete the following forms:

  1. Medical Release & Authorization to Treat: This form provides information on your insurance coverage in case of the need to seek medical treatment for your child.  In addition, you are asked to list any known food allergies.

  2. Green Leaf Waiver & Release: This form gives students permission to participate in the program.

What to do about selecting grade levels?

The teacher will plan activities and lessons that are appropriate for the grade level listed in the course selections based on California standards. Lead teachers are all credentialed.

Selecting a Grade Level:

As a guideline, we recommend that you register your child for classes that coincide with the grade your child will enter when school begins next fall. The grade level is listed in front of each course, for example 1-2 Science is a combination class recommended for students who will begin either grade 1 or grade 2 next fall, and 1 Arts & Crafts is recommended for students who will begin grade 1 next fall.  If the teacher determines that this level is not appropriate for your child, you will be informed and a recommendation for a different level or different course will be provided.

Math & Reading Assessments / Levels:

Courses in the mathematics and language arts sections are listed according to grade level. Teachers give an assessment to students on the first day of school and will make level changes as needed. Parents will be called if a change is recommended by the teacher.

What to do about parking for drop off and pick up?

Parking is available on campus in the lower level lot. Please allow extra time to park and walk your child to the line-up area.

What to do about grades and progress reports?

Green Leaf Academy does not offer report cards or grades. Instead we offer a certificate of completion. Our goal is to remove the pressure of grades and make learning exciting and fun.

What to do about recess & snacks?

Students have a supervised recess period from 10:20am to 10:40am. They may bring a healthy snack and drink from home to enjoy at this time.

What to do about refunds?

If your summer plans change and The Green Leaf Academy is notified of your need to cancel enrollment prior to the start of classes, you will receive a refund of fees based on the following schedule.  Notification by:

  • 90% refund May 18 - June 9

  • 50% refund June 10 - June 16

  • No refunds once the program begins (unless there are extenuating circumstances, for example hospitalization)

  • There is no fee reduction or rebate if a student does not complete all 5 weeks

What to do about reluctant learners?

Our classes are rigorous, but are designed to provide a rich curriculum that offers materials and activities students may not have encountered during the regular school year. Thus, many of our classes are very popular, even with reluctant learners. In order to ensure your child’s cooperation, many parents consult their child when selecting classes—perhaps offering the child an option of a “fun” enrichment class, while the parent selects a class considered more “academic work” oriented.  We do not allow one child to compromise the learning of another. If your child is not participating properly in class or disrupts the learning environment, you will be contacted to withdraw your child from the program.

What to do about schedule changes?
  • One week prior to the program starting, there will be a $25 change fee

  • During the program there will be a $25 change fee (unless the change is a suggested grade level change recommended by The Green Leaf Academy)

Many classes are in high demand and are filled quickly. In order for your child to get the class he or she wants, be sure to enroll as early as possible. Once the program begins, if you request a class change, a $25 change fee will be assessed, unless the change is a suggested grade level change recommended by The Green Leaf Academy. These recommendations are based on the first day assessment in math and reading classes.

What to do about late arrival / tardiness?

A member of the staff will remain at the tardy table until 8:45. If you arrive to drop off your child after this time, please walk your child into school and go to the Tardy Desk to get his/her Name Badge and a late slip. After signing in, you may escort your child to class. Please do not send your child to class alone, or go to class late without first getting an admit slip from the tardy desk.

What to do if a class is closed - waitlist?

If a class is full there are two steps to complete.  First, enroll in an open class.  You must enroll in 4 classes, or you cannot pay and complete registration. Second, add your child’s name to the class you would like to be enrolled in.  We do not guarantee space, but will make every effort to accommodate your request if there are changes in enrollment. Students are added on a first come first served basis.
